2014-2015 Research Grant Program
Statement of Grant Eligibility The Society for Pediatric Urology will sponsor an annual research grant in 2013 of up to $30,000. The purpose of the grant is to promote pediatric urological research at a faculty/attending level and help SPU members to develop innovative and impact-creating research proposals in order to obtain a more sustainable outside funding.
All areas of research will be promoted, including basic science, translational as well as clinical research. Depending upon the quality of applications, the SPU may split the grant amount to support more than one proposal. Eligibility for the grant is limited to pediatric urological clinicians in practice or clinicians and researchers serving within divisions or departments of pediatric urology. Fellows are ineligible to serve as Principle Investigator on the SPU Research Grant. Applicants must be members of the SPU or have member sponsorship. Research that is actively NIH funded is excluded from consideration.
INSTRUCTIONS AND DEADLINE Please read the guidelines below thoroughly. Any questions regarding the award and criteria should be directed to John Park, MD, SPU Research Award Chair at admin@spuonline.org.
- A 2-page Letter of Intent (LOI) summarizing the proposal should be submitted by Feb 15th.
- The selected applicants will be notified by March 1st and invited to submit a full application by April 1st.
- The winner will be notified by mid April.
- The application must come from a Society for Pediatric Urology (SPU) member or be sponsored by an SPU member.
Review Process
The LOI and applications (for those invited), along with all supporting documents, must be received by the above dates. LOI and applications received after the specified date will not be considered. Applications will be reviewed by the SPU Research Grant Committee. Grant winner(s) will be announced at the 2014 SPU Annual Meeting. Winner(s) must be present at the SPU Annual Meeting to accept the award and make a 10-minute presentation of their proposal. Upon completion of the required paperwork from the sponsoring institution, funds will be made available.
Terms of Support Support will be provided for one year in the total amount not to exceed $30,000. Funds provided by a SPU Research Grant will be administered by the appropriate fiscal department of the investigator’s institution. Funds may be used only for technician salary, equipment, supplies, animals, clinical research costs or other expenses directly related to the conduct of the proposed research. Funds for a SPU Research Grant may not be used for any of the following:
- Salary or fringe benefits for the investigator or collaborating investigators
- Indirect costs or overhead
- Costs of patient care
- Constructing or renovating facilities
- Furniture or office equipment
- Secretarial services
- Honoraria or membership dues
- Textbooks or periodicals
- Repair or service contract costs on institutional equipment
Other Support
The Society for Pediatric Urology anticipates that investigators who successfully compete for funds from other agencies will not require support by the SPU. If, during the period of support by SPU, the investigator obtains funding for any research project of greater dollar amount from a source outside the investigator’s institution (such as the National Institutes of Health, Veterans Administration or a philanthropic group), the Research Grant will be terminated at the start of funding by the other agency. Awards which are explicitly limited to salary support for the investigator or other faculty are excluded from this restriction. To assist the SPU Research Grant Committee in implementing this policy and the support of young investigators, the application must include copies of all letters of award for research projects, as well as any other current supports, in which the applicant is or will be participating.
Institutional Commitment A letter of commitment from the Chairman of the applicant’s department must be submitted with the application for a SPU Research Grant.
