INSTRUCTIONS

Please read the application thoroughly. Any questions regarding the award and criteria should be directed to David Diamond, MD,SPU Research Award Chair at david.diamond.harvard.edu.

  1. The application must come from a Society for Pediatric Urology (SPU)member or be sponsored by an SPU member.
  2. Deadline for submission is March 1, 2010. Applications received after this date will not be considered.
Deadline and Review Process
Applications and all supporting documents for Research Grants must be received by the specified deadline, the deadline TBD at this time. Applications received after the specified date will not be considered. Applications will be reviewed by the SPU Research Grant Committee.

Successful applicants will be announced at the 2011 SPU Annual Meeting, which will be held in May 14, 2011 in Washington, DC. Winner(s) will be notified in advance and must be present at the SPU Annual Meeting in Washington, DC to accept the award. Upon completion of the required paperwork from the sponsoring institution, funds will be made available.

Terms of Support

Support will be provided for one year in the total amount not to exceed $30,000. Funds provided by a SPU Research Grant will be administered by the appropriate fiscal department of the investigator’s institution. Funds may be used only for technician salary, equipment, supplies, animals, clinical research costs or other expenses directly related to the conduit of the proposed research. Funds for a SPU Research Grant may not be used for any of the following:

  1. Salary or fringe benefits for the investigator or collaborating investigators
  2. Indirect costs or overhead
  3. Costs of patient care
  4. Constructing or renovating facilities
  5. Furniture or office equipment
  6. Secretarial services
  7. Honoraria or membership dues
  8. Textbooks or periodicals
  9. Repair or service contract costs on institutional equipment
Other Support
The Society for Pediatric Urology anticipates that investigators who have or successfully compete for funds from other agencies will not require support by a SPU Research Grant. If, during the period of support by a Research Grant, the investigator obtains funding for any research project of greater dollar amount from a source outside the investigator’s institution (such as the National Institutes of Health, Veterans Administration or a philanthropic group), the Research Grant will be terminated at the start of funding by the other agency. Awards which are explicitly limited to salary support for the investigator or other faculty are excluded from this restriction. To assist the SPU Research Grant Committee in implementing this policy, the application should include copies of all letters of award for research projects in which the applicant is or will be participating.

Application
Please note that the Application Form below and all subsequent instructions reflect the 2009 Research Grant application process. An updated application form and instructions will be available late summer 2010.

The Application Form contains two Sections.

Section 1 consists of two (2) pages to be completed by the applicant.

Section 2 is found on page 3 of the Application and is a list of required information and attachments, including the Principal Investigator’s CV. The Research Plan should be divided into the following Parts:

Part A. Specific Aims (limited to one page)
Part B. Significance and Background (limited to three pages)
Part C. Preliminary Studies (limited to six pages)
Part D. Experimental Design and Methods (limited to seven pages)
Part E. References
Part F. Personal Statement (limited to one page)
Part G. Appendix

The page limitations for the different Parts of the Research Plan are the maximum acceptable. Conciseness of description is desirable and fewer pages than the maximum allowable will usually be sufficient for Parts C and D.

Section 2 should be submitted as a Word document using 11-point proportional font as the smallest print permitted. There must be no more than 60 lines per page. Your application may be denied scientific review if it exceeds required number of pages or permitted type size.

An Appendix may be used for presenting data tabulation, figures, graphs, submitted manuscripts, abstracts and papers. Any Appendix should not contain further descriptive material.

Statements must accompany the application demonstrating that the appropriate reviews have been obtained by human subjects, animal care or other committees of the institution. Please limit the amount of faculty and institutional references contained in applications. Applications are blinded prior to being sent to reviewers.

Institutional Commitment
A letter of commitment from the Chairman of the applicant’s department must be submitted with the application for a SPU Research Grant.

Please submit all originals plus four copies of the grant only to:
